XRay for Minecraft 1.20.1: what it shows and which file to take

Minecraft 1.20.1 (June 2023) is the stable Trails & Tales build and the current modpack favourite. Trails & Tales did not touch ore generation, so the 1.18 layout still applies: diamonds near Y −58, iron at Y 16 and above Y 128, copper in dripstone caves, emeralds in the peaks. What changed is what is worth finding on the surface: trail ruins are buried under gravel and suspicious gravel, and with XRay on they show as a block of terracotta and stone bricks under an ordinary hill.

XRay Ultimate version 5.0.0 for 1.19–1.20 is the build for 1.20.1. It is the same zip for every 1.19 and 1.20 patch, so you do not need a separate download when the launcher updates from 1.20.1 to 1.20.4.

Options for 1.20.1

• XRay Ultimate — the texture pack, version 5.0.0 for 1.19–1.20. Transparent stone, visible ore, no mod loader needed.
• XRay Mod for Fabric — the same idea for Fabric and Quilt, with the X key and a configurable ore list.

Installing XRay on 1.20.1

1. Optifine is optional on 1.20.1, but it makes the transparent blocks render without dark faces. Sodium users can skip it.
2. Download the zip and leave it zipped.
3. Open Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder and drop the zip there.
4. Move the pack to the right column, click Done and wait for the reload. The ground turns transparent at once, no new world needed.

Questions people ask about XRay 1.20.1

Is it a cheat?

On your own world it is a tool, on someone else’s server it is a cheat. Nearly every public server on 1.20.1 runs an anti-xray plugin that either hides ore until you dig next to it or logs the mining pattern and bans later. Use it for exploring your maps, for finding a lost base or a stronghold, and turn it off before joining a server.

Does it work with Sodium or Iris?

Yes. The pack is plain textures, it does not need Optifine on 1.20.1. Some faces may look darker with Sodium because of smooth lighting; turning smooth lighting to minimum fixes it.

Where are the diamonds on 1.20.1?

Dig to about Y −58 and look along the bottom with the pack on. Diamonds generate most often there, and the pack makes them visible through deepslate. Caves below Y 0 reduce the count, so a solid stretch of deepslate is the better place to look.

Can the pack ruin a save?

No. A resource pack changes only what is drawn, not the world file. Remove it from the right column and the world looks normal again.
