XRay mods for Minecraft: Forge, Fabric and the older ones

An XRay mod gives you a switch instead of a permanent effect. Press X and the stone, dirt and other filler blocks vanish; press it again and the world is back. The list of blocks that stay visible is yours to edit, so you can keep only diamonds and ancient debris, or add spawners, chests and lava. There is a render distance setting too, which matters on 1.18+ where a big cave system turns into visual noise at full range.

Three mods cover the versions on this site. XRay Mod for Forge runs from 1.5.2 up to 1.19.4. XRay Mod for Fabric picks up at 1.15.2 and is the one still maintained, with builds through 1.21; it needs Fabric API and runs on Quilt as well. Julialy’s X-Ray is the old Forge mod for 1.7.10–1.12.2 with a cave finder and a fly mode on top of the ore view.

Installing

1. Install the loader for your version: Forge or Fabric plus Fabric API.
2. Download the mod jar for the same version.
3. Put it into the mods folder inside .minecraft.
4. Start the game with the loader profile. Press X in the world; the key can be changed in Controls.

Mod or texture pack?

The mod is the better everyday tool: a hotkey, an ore list, no effect until you want it. The texture pack wins when there is no mod loader, on a vanilla client, in Eaglercraft, or on a version the mod skipped, such as 1.13–1.14 where only the pack exists.

Questions

Is it detectable on servers?

Yes. Anti-xray plugins send fake ore to the client, so the mod shows blocks that are not there, and the server logs tunnels that go straight to real diamonds. Use it in singleplayer, on LAN and on your own server.

Does it work with Optifine or Sodium?

The Fabric build works with Sodium and Iris. The Forge build works with Optifine on 1.12.2–1.16.5; on 1.17+ Optifine and Forge mods conflict more often, so test without Optifine first.

Why do I see nothing after pressing X?

Either the key is bound to something else in Controls, or the block list is empty. Open the mod settings (the default key is Backslash in the Forge build) and tick the ores you want.
