OptiFine has been around for over a decade, and it is still one jar file doing three jobs at once. It adds dozens of graphics and performance settings, it reads HD resource pack features such as connected textures and custom skies, and it loads shader packs. The author, sp614x, still releases it for new Minecraft versions. What has changed is everything around it: on Fabric and NeoForge most players now reach for Sodium plus Iris instead, so this page also explains when OptiFine is still the right pick.
A common misunderstanding first: OptiFine does not need Forge. It runs on its own, and it can also be dropped into Forge as a mod. Both routes are below.
What you get in Video Settings
After installing, the familiar Video Settings screen grows several submenus: Details, Quality, Performance, Animations, Other and Shaders. The main page also gains switches like Dynamic Lights, which makes a torch in your hand or on the ground light up the blocks around it.

The Quality page is where the resource pack features live. Connected Textures joins glass, bookshelves and sandstone into one continuous surface instead of a grid. With Custom Sky, a pack can replace the day and night sky. Random Entities and Custom Entity Models let packs vary mob textures and shapes, and Emissive Textures makes parts of blocks glow. Better Grass paints the sides of grass blocks green, so hills look smoother from a distance.

On the speed side, the Performance page holds chunk loading and render options, and on the Animations page you can turn off individual effects (water, fire, particles) one by one. On a weak laptop, cutting particles and animated textures is often the quickest win. Our FPS guide walks through which settings to drop first.
Two ways to install it
Pick the file for your exact Minecraft version from the list below this text. Then choose a route.

Standalone (no other mods)
- Start the vanilla version once in the official launcher so its files exist.
- Double-click the OptiFine jar. The OptiFine installer opens; click Install.
- In the launcher, pick the new OptiFine profile and press Play.
If double-clicking opens an archive program instead of the installer, your system has no Java associated with .jar files. Install a Java runtime, or run java -jar followed by the file name from a terminal.
As a Forge mod
- Install Minecraft Forge for the same game version.
- Do not run the OptiFine installer. Put the jar straight into the mods folder inside .minecraft.
- Launch the forge profile. OptiFine appears in the mod list and its menus appear in Video Settings.
The catch with Forge is version matching. Each OptiFine build is made against a particular Forge build, and sp614x lists which one next to every release. Preview builds often list none at all, meaning they are not meant to run under Forge. When a Forge pack crashes on start with OptiFine in it, try a different Forge build or remove OptiFine first: it changes so much of the renderer that some mods do not work beside it.
Preview or stable: reading the file names
A file like OptiFine_1.16.5_HD_U_G6.jar breaks down simply. HD U is the HD Ultra edition, and G6 is the build, where later letters mean newer code. Files that start with preview_ or end in pre plus a number are test builds: they come out first for a new Minecraft version and can still have bugs.
That matters here because for recent versions we only have previews. Every file from 1.20 through 1.21.7 on this page is a preview, and so are most 1.19.x files. The stable builds we carry are the classic ones people search for most: 1.8.9 (L5), 1.12.2 (E1), 1.16.5 (G6), 1.17.1 (G9), 1.18.1 (H4) and 1.19.2 (H9). If a preview misbehaves and you are not tied to a newer version, 1.19.2 is the latest one where we have a stable build.
Shaders, HD packs and zoom
Shaders are the main reason many players install OptiFine at all. Put the shader pack zip, still zipped, into the shaderpacks folder in .minecraft, then open Video Settings, then Shaders, and pick it from the list. The same menu has a button that opens the folder for you.

Good packs to start with are Sildur’s Vibrant for a lighter load, BSL by Capt Tatsu, and Complementary by EminGT. Shaders cost far more frame rate than OptiFine saves, so on integrated graphics start with the lowest profile inside the pack’s own settings.

Vanilla Minecraft can load high-resolution resource packs by itself, but many realistic packs also rely on OptiFine-only features like connected textures or custom item models to look the way their screenshots do. Packs such as Hera Ultra Photo Realism are a good test of how much your graphics card can take.

Zoom is built in too. Hold C to zoom in, and rebind it under Options, Controls if C is taken by another mod.
OptiFine on Fabric, and the Sodium route
OptiFine itself is not a Fabric mod. OptiFabric, by Chocohead and modmuss50, patches it to load on Fabric at runtime. You put both OptiFabric and the regular OptiFine jar into the mods folder. Its last builds target 1.20.4, and its own page warns that it is not supported by either Fabric or OptiFine.

Most Fabric players skip that and build the same result from separate mods. Sodium replaces the renderer for higher frame rates, and Iris loads the same OptiFine-format shader packs on top of it. The two approaches cannot be mixed: Sodium refuses to start alongside OptiFabric. You lose OptiFine’s built-in extras, so zoom, connected textures and custom models each need their own small mod on the Sodium side. For a newer version with mods, that trade is usually worth it. For 1.8.9 PvP or 1.12.2 with Forge, OptiFine is still the simple answer.

Common questions
Does OptiFine need Forge?
No. Forge is only needed if you want other Forge mods at the same time. On its own, OptiFine installs through its own installer and gets its own launcher profile.
Can I use OptiFine and Sodium together?
No. Both rewrite the same rendering code. Choose one: OptiFine for an all-in-one jar, or Sodium with Iris on Fabric or NeoForge. If you also want the game to stop burning power while it sits minimized, Dynamic FPS handles that.
Which OptiFine do I need for 1.8.9 or 1.12.2?
The one whose file name contains your exact version: OptiFine_1.8.9_HD_U_L5 and optifine_1.12.2_hd_u_e1 here. A build for 1.12 will not load on 1.12.2.
i love it its like more fps and zoom mixed

Its a Great Mod!
Need some help for my son’s MineCraft Forge 1.12.2
So here’s what I’ve done.
I download OptiFine 1.12.2 jar file and placed it in the “C:\Users\nikol\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\versions” folder.
I double click it to install it under the “Versions” folder, successfully.
Then I downloaded the “Chocapic13_HightPerformance_Toaster.zip” file.
I moved it to “C:\Users\nikol\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\resourcepacks”.
I then extracted the zip file to the same folder and deleted the zip file.
I then opened MineCraft
Under “Installations” I see the “OptiFine” and “Forge”
When I launch “Forge” I can see other mods I’ve installed for my son (ex: Engineer’s Door’s) but “Shaders” isn’t in the “MODS” menu (which if I’m reading all these instructions correctly it shouldn’t be, correct?).
I then click “Options” menu and click the “Resource Packs” menu. There are no files under the “Available Resource Packs” heading. If I click the “Open Resource Packs Folder”, I see the “shaders” folder that I unzipped from the “Chocapic13_HightPerformance_Toaster.zip” file.
If I try launching the “OptiFine” from the minecraft launch menu it opens up but there is again nothing in this mod or resource pack menu. Also, non of my son’s other mods are there at all.
Put optifine.jar in \.minecraft\mods folder
put shader file in \.minecraft\shaders folder
launch Forge version
go to settings>graphics>shaders and there you`ll find them
Thank you for the quick response, I really appreciate the help.
I placed the optifine_1.12.2_hd_u_e1 file that I previously downloaded in the “MODS” folder
I placed the Chocapic13_HightPerformance_Toaster.zip in here “C:\Users\nikol\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\shaderpacks”
I extracted the file there and then clicked on minecraft to launch it.
The launcher screen comes up.
I selected Forge1.12 and received the following error message
Game Crashed
An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.
Exit Code:0
I tried installing the optifine jar file and it was successful.
I tried to launch the game again, same error came up.
I tried extracting the optine file in the mods folder and then removed the optifine file and tried launching it again.
the game loads but there is no change.
When you say “graphics” do you mean “video settings” ? Because there is no “graphics” menu option.
well that was a bad idea of me extracting that OptiFine file under the mods. the launcher comes up but when I try to launch 1.12.2 forge I get the same error code 0
re-installed Forge and it appears that fixed the game launching however I still can get the shaders.
Any other suggestions?
Not sure if looked closely at my previous responses but there is no “shaders” folder, there is only a “shaderpacks” folder. I tried creating one under the .mincraft folder and put the files there but that didn’t change anything. I also placed the shader files in the “shaderpacks” folder and launched the game, nothing in the video settings still. 🙁
Yes, shaderpacks is correct folder. Make sure, you laucnh version 1.12.2 and download Optifine for 1.12.2

How do you download optifine? I’m leaving a review and I already haven’t downloaded it. Please tell me! Thank you! Btw, don’t ask for random people’s gmail and they’re name. It is a invasion of privacy. I put in a fake email, and a fake name. Just to let you know, don’t stalk.
Thank you!
Just press the according version’s button and put it underneath the minecraft player.
If you need any further assistance, watch a video.
You press the download you want. Then locate the .jar file once it has been downloaded. Then, type in the search bar %appdata%, open that folder, click .minecraft, then open the versions folder. Copy the .jar file, then double click, install, then select the version in the minecraft launcher.
On the subject of the email. There is no requirment to put in your email unless you want to send a message, a fake email like you used will do. And stalking has a completely different defenition to what your using it for. Emails are used for businesses to contact you, or for you to contact the business, they cannot veiw any private information with your email.
I hope this helped!
